LifeWay Christian Resources Unveils Digital Bible Initiative: MyStudyBible.com

Coinciding with the October 2010 release of the HCSB Study Bible, LifeWay Christian Resources announces the release of a premiere online service to read and study the Bible.

MyStudyBible.com has officially launched as a public beta to preview the growing features and content several weeks in advance of the long-awaited HCSB Study Bible. MyStudyBible.com contains the complete HCSB Study Bible AND commentary notes, as well as select content from books like the Holman New Testament Commentary and references from Strong’s Greek and Hebrew Dictionary.

Aaron Linne, Digital Marketing Manager, describes MyStudyBible.com as “a part of an aggressive digital marketing campaign for the HCSB Study Bible to include social media marketing, search engine ad words and targeted Facebook campaigns. The online Bible site will continue LifeWay’s path to utilizing the biblical text in new ways, presenting products and ideas where the Bible itself becomes the basis for our digital publishing efforts.”

The HCSB Study Bible represents the work of 35 scholars, many of whom worked on the translation itself to produce the word studies and translation notes during the translation process. It also entailed a $100,000 national market research campaign with study Bible users to determine the design and features that people said they most wanted in a Bible. In addition to print and online editions, LifeWay is publishing the HCSB Study Bible in eBook form for Kindle, Nook, iBook and others, and releasing the HCSB Study Bible app for iPhone and iPad, with other mobile platforms soon to come.

“This is the first product in the history of our company that will be releasing with a full scale launch on all print and digital fronts and it is very fitting that it would be for our flagship HCSB Study Bible,” said Paul Mikos, Digital Executive Editor.

The Holman Christian Standard Bible (HCSB) translation launched in 2004 and since that time, more than 6 million HCSB Bibles have been sold. The HCSB is translated directly from the original Greek, Hebrew and Aramaic.

I go to the Bible to get to know God better, to gain understanding, and to get practical help for life. With the HCSB Study Bible, I get that without having to be a biblical scholar or without having to dig. The extra information I need to give insights into what the Scriptures are saying to me at the place I am now is on the same page. No searching, no clicking to go to other websites, but written on the page. That makes me feel as if I am not alone on the search for answers. Someone else has been there before me and because of this, they've made a way for others to find understanding.

The HCSB draws a picture in the reader's mind of the people, events, and places. The charts, pictures, and commentary beautifully describe the environment and context of the Scriptures to aid in the reader's understanding. When reading through it, I can see Jesus walking through the streets, hear the words spoken, and make the connection that the Scriptures are not a fable, but a record of real people and real events that changed the world forever.

I love the explanations of the Greek words right on the page of the scripture being read. This makes study easier than having to dig through other books to get the meaning of words. Easy is good! It makes the study time that I have more productive and more focused on the learning process rather than the searching process.

The opening review of each book is very thorough. The verse by verse commentary is very informative. Maps, pictures, visuals, and charts are well done and strategically placed in the commentary. One of the most impressive features is the key word emphasis of the text's original language.

The words “user-friendly” are much over used today, but the HCSB Study Bible certainly deserves them. There are features in this study Bible that are both unique and extremely helpful. The graphics are amazing, the maps are understandable, the essays are like taking a mini-course in that subject, and the timelines are my favorite. The HCSB Study Bible is the most beautiful study Bible I've ever seen. The shades of brownish-golds used in side-boxes and the copper and cyan inks used in headings and verse numbers make the whole text come alive. The illustrations are dramatic, clear, colorful, and educational. But the contents page demonstrates the scholarship that has gone into this reference Bible. I recognized many of the contributors, and know of their commitment to a clear, scholarly treatment of the text. The judicious use of Hebrew and Greek-term explanations calls the reader to further study. The maps place the events of the text into proper perspective. This is definitely a study Bible I will buy.

The HCSB Study Bible combines a number of attractive features to equip men and women for better understanding and living the truths of Scripture. I strongly affirm Jeremy Howard's introductory comment, "As servants to the text, the study tools are designed to keep the focus on Scripture and never on the tools themselves."

Both the Scripture and study notes are easier to read than most Bibles-especially study Bibles. Love, love, love the easy-to-read font size of study notes! The timelines that are part of the introduction to each book are arranged so that the eye easily follows the flow of events that illuminate that particular Bible book. Illustrations are fresh and new, providing great snapshots of what is happening. Charts are of high quality and well placed in the biblical text. The word studies are useful to both lay readers and scholars in better understanding key words in context. The essays are a great addition enabling the reader to find more in-depth explanation/commentary without overwhelming the biblical text or the study notes.

Bottom line: I will not only recommend this study Bible, but I will purchase one for my own use in personal Bible study and as a teacher. In addition, I will share this resource when helping adult Bible study leaders discover effective Bible study tools.

As a busy pastor, I love the rich resources available all in one volume in the HCSB Study Bible. It has all of the things one would expect in a study Bible, including center column cross-references, helpful notes at the bottom of the page, maps, introductions to each book of the Bible and a concordance in the back. But it also has some extras that set it apart from any other study Bible I have seen: word studies of Hebrew and Greek words, timelines to place events in their historical chronology, a Bible reading plan and essays on theological issues. This may very well be the best study Bible available to date.
